Piata Mica (The Small Plaza)

Preserved from the XVth and XVIth Century, this plaza encompasses beautiful houses chained with eyebrows.

Turnul Sfatului (Council Tower)

Built in the XIIth Century, the tower was mentioned for the first time in 1370. The name refers to the building where the first town’s council had taken place. The tower became fortress entrance inside the second fortification belt. Today, it is one of the best-known and most visited symbols of the town.

Pharmacy Museum

Situated in the Small Plaza, the museum comprises Gothic and Renaissance elements. From 1600 until 1970, this building has been a pharmacy named “The black bear”. The collection of wood instruments, ceramic and wood pieces, some phials and vials remains stand as testimony of the medicine practiced during that time.

Huet Plaza

Following The Small Plaza, Huet Plaza represents the central point of the medieval castle, characterised by Gothic style, where the buildings had been raised on the old fortress. Here, there’s the castle’s tallest edifice, The Evangelical Church (XIVth-XVth Century), which snugs the old crucifix from the XVth Century, a tombs and tombstones collection.
Backwards the plaza, there is the Stairs Passage, medieval stairs that sustain the fortress and the arches.Reaching the end of the stairs, there is a tower from which you can admire a beautiful panorama, a view of the city from above.

Podul Minciunilor (The Deception Bridge)

It represents the first wrought bridge from Romania and it was built in 1859 by Fredericus Hütte, connecting The Small Plaza with Huet Plaza. The bridge was completely renovated in 2006.

Piata Mare (The Big Plaza)

Mentioned for the first time in 1411 as a corn market, the market exists from 1366, once with the end of the third town’s fortification and it’s, in fact, Sibiu’s historical center. At the beginning of the XVIth Century, the Big Plaza became the old castle’s center. The south part of the plaza it is actually an architectural monument because of the unique medieval style that was maintained here. It is also known as “the town’s eyes” because of the roof ‘windows.

In the Big Plaza from Sibiu, there are the following historical buildings
:

Brukenthal Palace

Brukenthal Palace from Sibiu (1777-1785) was built in the Austrian baroque style by the baron Samuel Brukenthal, Transylvania’s Governor. The building possesses an imposing frontage, with basement, ground floor and two levels, a high roof with three horizontal registers with a discreet decoration and ceilings richly designed with a diversity of stucco symbols. The glitter official saloons are adorned with richly-designed roofs, also with stucco symbols. There are two cortiles (the festive one and the annexe one) separated by a Renascent porch where we find the Art Museum and the Brukenthal Library.

The White House

On the west side of Brukenthal Palace there is the White House, from the XVth Century. The backside of the building has lodged, between 1768-1783, theatre performances. The “white house” name was given in 1819, and 1858-1862 the building was general headquarter for the Natural Sciences Society. In the XIXthmid-century in this building a cloths store functioned and also the Law School.
Nowadays, the building is used by Brukenthal Museum.

Generals’ House

The building brings out a vaulted entrance that ends in Arhivelor Street. This access was opened in 1558 and developed in 1775, when the house has been transformed. In the second half of the XVth Century, somewhere around 1475, the house belonged to Paul Horwath - Remser.
In 1779, the building was purchased by the Magistracy and then, in 1784-1904, it was Austrian troupes headquartering in Transylvania. That’s why the building was named Generals’ House.

Haller’s House

The most important building from the plaza, built in Renaissance style that maintains many original elements from the XVth-XVIth Century as the porch with coat of arms, the entrance in eyebrows and the decorations. The building was the property of many local personalities.

Weidner Reusner Czekelius House

In the gangway there is a sculpted stone frame from 1582 that represents Johann Reusner the Second. The principal doorway is characterized by the same elements as the Haller’s, but in the center there is the Johann Reusner Junior Maier’s coat of arms. The coat of arms is marked with the year 1652 and with the monogram EN (Elias Nicolai). The doorway itself is older with at last 100 years. In the center of that door there is a wide shield rounded pin badge marked with the symbol CW (Czirves - Servatius - Weidner Junior) and the year 1582.
The right part near the doorway was owned by Weidner family, than the Senator Johann Reussner junior and after the D part of the building was owned for the last quarter of the XVth Century by the Czekelius family. The house, which in 1875 was composed of 2 different buidings, at present,it is formed by 7 different parts.

Artelor’s House

Having 8 arches Artelor’s (Arts’) House is one of the most beautiful buildings in Sibiu.Built in 15 Century, the building was known as Macelarilor ( Butchers’ ) House because of the big number of ground-floor stores. From 2006, the building is lodging Emil Sigerus Museum.

Sibius’s medieval fortifications

The medieval fortifications include an important number of towers as Turnul Sfatului (Council Tower), Turnul Panzarilor (Mercers’ Tower) and Turnul Olarilor (Potters’ Tower) remembering that every brotherhood had the task to participate at the fortress’ protection.
Turnul Pulberei (Powder Tower), was built in 1552 as a stock building for gun powder, Turnul Olarilor (Potters’ Tower) and Soldisch Bastion, built in 1627, one of the most interesting fortifications.

The nether town

The 9 Mai (May) Street is the oldest street of the town.It has been named for a long time Elisabeth’s Street. The crossing between 9 Mai and Ocnei Street is considered the nether town’s center and the place is called Dragoner Plaza. Until 1976 it was placed in the center in an island form that accommodated the seat of Austrian dragons. Taking the Azilului Street, you can find the Azilului (Hospice) Church and the Home for elderly, mentioned for the first time in 1292 when the crusaders’ church named Holy Spirit had organized here the first Sibiu’s hospital for ill and poor people. The Tower Street (Strada Turnului) had been in Middle Ages one of the most important streets of the city. The crossing with Faurului Street was known as Crown Plaza (Piata Coroana)
