Evangelical Cathedral from Sibiu is one of the most impressive buildings in the city and one of the finest Gothic buildings in Transylvania. In the fourteenth century it was built in an old Romanesque basilica dating from the twelfth century. Since 2004 was submitted on the list of historical monuments in Sibiu.
The Evangelical Cathedral it is dominated by the tower which has seven levels with four towers on the corners. The tower is the tallest medieval building in Romania, with a height of 73.34 m, in interior has arched vaults and tombstones, the Gothic style is one that represents the cathedral.
In 1899 before the cathedral was erected the statue of Bishop Georg Daniel Teutsch (1817-1893).
Cathedral Choir is on the south side, at the balcony, including a Baroque organ made in 1671. It was installed in the cathedral in 1915. Bronze baptismal font located in the choir, in the axis of the church, is one of the most beautiful in the country. It dates from 1438, and on its surface are 228 plaques in relief, most figurative representation of Byzantine influence.
Since 1496 the church was used as a burial place for mayors, counties and other personalities from Sibiu. This was allowed 300 years, from 1796 burial is prohibited. The only exception was made in 1803 when it was buried here Baron Samuel von Brukental.
Evangelical Cathedral can be visited from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.. In summer, every Wednesday evening, organ concerts held here. Church tower can be visited on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00-17:00 and between 12:00-15:00 on weekdays only for groups of at least five people.
