Fagaras Mountains alpine of Sibiu lies between Podragu and Suru and is a protected area.
With an area of 6.989 ha, the nature reserve is located in the northern part of the Fagaras Mountains, in the center of massive glacial. This alpine runs from Podragu Peak (2.482m) and Suru Peak (2281). On the alpine territory are suspended caldrons, glacial lakes, moraines, rocky areas, valleys, streams, steep hills, meadows and forested areas. Glacial Lakes gives a special charm on the area, here being Balea Lake (area 4.65 ha), Avrigului Lake (1.50 ha), Podraru Lake (2.80 ha) or Lady Lake (0.30 ha). Grassy meadows and rocky vegetation it is made of species of edelweiss, Smard, sweet pea, white ivy, gentian, yellow wolfsbane or Russian.
At the bottom, woody vegetation is represented by beech, birch, aspen and willow. The trees are coniferous, spruce, pines, yews, zambra and zade, and juniper berry and bilberry.
Animals in the Fagaras Mountains alpine are brown bear, chamois, gray wolf, red deer, roe deer, wild boar, fox, Carpathian lynx or squirrel. The category birds find grouse, eagle, hawk, eagle, blackbird, tails, thrush, woodpecker or wagtail.
The river system in the area is the densest in the Carpathian Mountains. Rivers that are here are Arpașul, Cartisoara, Porumbacu, Avrig, Jiblea, Sebes and Tataru, each having at least one tributary.
