History and presentation
In the past, the Goldsmiths' Square in Sibiu was an area specially assigned to all goldsmiths who owned workshops. Since then, he has played an extremely important role, being the place where even some of the greatest personalities of the moment walked.
The Aurarilor Square in Sibiu maintains its medieval aspect that has consecrated it since 1567. Many of the tourists who arrive in this place are impressed by the Aurarilor Passage, which, in turn, is very picturesque. At the same time, many couples want to get here as it is recognized as one of the romantic places provided by the city.
Over time, the Aurarilor Square in Sibiu had different names. Thus, from 1496, it was called Beym Fingerlingsprunn. Later, in 1637, it was transformed into the Unter der Fingerlisstreppen. Only during the years 1872 - 1947 is it called Fingerlingsplatz, eventually receiving the name of I. C. Frimu Square. The name Piata Aurarilor din Sibiu has been given to it since 1970, this being the name by which it is known even today.
Right at the top, the Golden Passage offers the possibility to admire the defense tower, known as the Golden Gate Tower. It is placed in the second precinct of fortifications in Sibiu and dates back to the thirteenth century, contributing to the historical appearance of the city.
Chronological discoveries
According to the writings, the first elements were identified in 1496, when there was only a fountain with pipes in the area. Subsequently, both the square and the passage were called Fingerling, only until 1947.
The Golden Passage has an extremely important role in the Lower Town, given the fact that it ensures the connection with the Small Square. In the area, there is the house with numbers 1 and 2, both dating from 1567.
The houses with numbers 3 and 5 were built in the 19th and 18th centuries, respectively, preserving many elements dating from the 15th century. At the same time, house number 6 has an 18th-century Baroque chimney.
Another historical construction is the house number 7. Here you can admire a wind flag that has the year 1743 inscribed on it. Also, according to research, the elements of the building have existed since the 15th century.
