Franz Binder Museum of Ethnography in Sibiu part of ASTRA National Museum Complex. It was inaugurated in 1993 and is the only one in Romania whose profile is the research and ethnographic heritage of extra-European. The museum is housed in a building declared a historic monument, built in Gothic style and dating from 1865-1867. Original name of the building was Handicraftsman house. After World War II the building receives patronymic as Hermes House with commercial or administrative positions until 1989. In that year was restored and became the place where the Frank Binder Museum exhibitions were held.
The museum's collections have 3,000 objects, divided into two broad categories. The first among those who were extra-Sibiu ethnographic heritage, and the second is made up of objects in the National Museum Complex "ASTRA" after 1990. Donations made by the embassies of countries outside Europe have an important role in the museum collection. In 1862 Franz Binder has donated a collection of objects brought from the upper region of the White Nile, which is one of the first-hand specialized collections in the world. Here you can see a wooden sarcophagus with a history of over 2000 years and an Egyptian mummy.
